Walking Aids

Stair rails-
Adding a hard rail to the side of the staircase will provide more support where needed. It also gives the users extra support force as well as a sense of independence. In the case of my mother, the extra rail plays a major role on enabling her to get up and down the stairs. She pulls on both rails, gaining more balance and adjustment as she take each step when pulling from each rail travelling up an down the stair.

Walking frames-
To use a walking frame correctly users should lift and move it slightly in front of them. They can then lean on the frame, taking their weight through the hand grip, and then they should take two equal length steps into the centre of the frame.

In the case of my mother, she relies on the walking frame to take her from room to room indoors, mostly downstairs in the house. Having observed her on a daily basis, I find that she uses the walking dram to support her weight when walking around the house.
